Strings Attached Joni Mitchell Tribute This Weekend

Strings Attached Presents “The Music of Joni Mitchell
Three performances, July 27-29, in Austin and Marble Falls
Visit www.stringsattached.org for information and tickets, more details below
This Strings Attached show has been too long in coming.  With a world full of people (including those of us in Strings Attached) who can mark some of the major events in their lives by Joni Mitchell’s discography, we couldn’t resist the temptation any longer, and we hope you’ll join us for this career retrospective—from the mid 60s, through Hejira and beyond.
While Joni Mitchell never held claim to the #1 spot on the Billboard charts (her highest was #7 – can you name it?  See the * at bottom for the answer!), we suspect you have a place in your hearts for all the words to many of the songs you’ll hear, including…
Early Hits: Big Yellow Taxi, Chelsea Morning
From “Court & Spark”: Free Man in Paris, People’s Parties
From “Blue”:  This Flight Tonight, Carey
From “Hejira”: Coyote, Amelia, Strange Boy, Hejira
… and many more.  We even promise you a breathtaking early Joni Mitchell song which was never committed to vinyl—a “first” for your ears, and we’re honored to bring it to you.
As with all Strings Attached shows, you can expect to be comforted by the familiar—and challenged by the twist.   For this show, we’ve chosen four women to sing the lyrics of Joni Mitchell, and each one gives different meaning to the idea of “vocal power.”  Joining us to sing these songs will be Suzanna Choffel, Libby Kirkpatrick, Jean Synodinos and Molly Venter.   Visit their websites to form your own impressions of how these unique singer-songwriters will deliver the lyrics you love—then come and be surprised.
In addition to our “normal” Strings Attached performance in Austin (July 27th at St. Michael’s), we are privileged to be offering this show in a blissfully intimate house concert performance on Saturday, July 28th in Westlake.  Thanks to Lori and Ron Olfers for hosting the show.  Light food and appetizers will be available compliments of 2 Dine 4 Fine Catering, as will complimentary beer, wine, sodas and water.

* The answer?  Joni’s highest charting song was Help Me  off of “Court and Spark” which hit #7 on the Billboard charts.

20 Texas Artists Present Sgt. Pepper’s Live

Monday, May 14th, 2007

Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the revolutionary album, Will Taylor and Strings Attached will transport audiences on a psychedelic journey through the legendary music of the Beatles “Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band” album, Friday, May 25th and Sunday, May 27th, at St. David’s Church and the Nutty Brown Café, respectively. Performers slated for the event include:

Billy Harvey,Tony Scalzo (of Fastball), Molly Venter, Jean Synodinos, Wendy Colonna, Will Walden of the Grassy Knoll Boys, Coffee Seargents, Libby Kirkpatrick, Matt the Electrician, Rodney Connell, David Hess

Audience members are encouraged to come dressed in period clothing.

This Grammy Award winning album, dubbed by many as the ‘greatest album of all time’, expands upon the musical influences of blues, pop and rock to incorporate a wide range of experimental instruments and imaginative lyrics. Controversial for it’s time, the album was released in 1967, building upon the ‘Beatlemania’ of the early 60’s, and was an instant success.

Add to this Will Taylor’s own signature style of instrumentation; an ensemble cast of musicians, including a string quartet, horn section, tabla, sitar; and some of Austin’s most renowned guest artists, and these performances promise to be an incredible evening of entertainment. Timeless crowd-pleasers such as “With a Little Help from My Friends”, “A Day in the Life”, “When I’m 64” and “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” are just a sampling of what to expect as the album will be performed in its entirety. From controversial to mainstream, the music of the “Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band” album remains as innovative and enjoyable today as it was 40 years ago.

Recipient of numerous music awards, including this year’s winner of the Austin Music Award’s strings category, Will Taylor continues to ‘wow’ audiences with his unique brand of musical compilations and collaborations with talented guest performers. This event is one not to be missed!

Last year, Will Taylor and Strings Atached performed the entire Beatles White Album live to an audience of over 1600 Austin music fans.

Some comments from the show:

I’m someone who actually saw the Beatles live. It was at the Astrodome in Houston in the mid 1960’s. Mainly, I remember I could hardly hear the music because of so many screaming girls. Your show was truly special because I’m a fan of all the artists who performed. However I’d have to say that for me Carolyn Wonderland really brought the house down. The whole show was something I’ll always remember. Thank you. Diana P.   This is one of those quintessential Austin nights, magical! I can’t wait for the next concert!!!!   Will and SA, it was absolutely fabulous. One of the most energetic and magical shows that I’ve ever been to. How you managed to squeeze in all those musicians/singers and have the quality of performance that you did is a testament to all who contributed! Thanks so much for a very memorable evening — what a great way to close out your season! :) Gale C.
